Share Wi-Fi Network Passwords Using QR Codes

Yes, You Can Share Your WiFi With a QR Code

Apple has a feature built into iOS, iPadOS, and macOS that when you are connected to a Wi-Fi network, your devices will offer to share the Wi-Fi password if others near you try to connect to the same network. However, for this feature to work, they must be in your Contacts, and at times, it doesn’t activate as quickly as you’d like.

Apple’s new Passwords app on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac provides a manual alternative that may work better. Tap the Wi-Fi collection to see all your remembered networks, select the desired network, and tap Show Network QR Code. When others scan the QR code using their phones, they will instantly join the network.

You can also make a screenshot of your phone’s screen and then print that out, to post at your location to make it super easy for others to join your network.

Comcast/Xfinity

If your service is through Comcast/Xfinity, they provide similar functionality through the Xfinity app.

  2. Log in: Sign in using your Xfinity ID and password.
  3. Navigate to WiFi settings: Go to the “WiFi” tab, then select “WiFi details” or a similar option to view your network information.
  4. Share WiFi: The app will usually have an option to share your WiFi, often involving generating a QR code.
  5. Present the QR code: Your guests can then use their smartphone’s camera to scan the QR code, and it will automatically connect them to your WiFi network
  6. You can take a screenshot, using the instructions from Apple above, and print that out to post at your location to make is super easy for others to join your network.
